The opening day of the Malaysian Masters took place today and there's already been a number of shocks on day one.

The BWF Super 500 event is running from the 15th to the 20th January with a number of the world’s best Badminton players looking to get their hands on the trophy come Sunday.

Europeans falling early in the Mixed Doubles

The opening round of the Mixed Doubles took centre stage on day one in Kuala Lumpa but has seen mixed results for the European hopefuls.

Just three of the eight European pairs have made it through the opening round in Malaysia, so far, including a shock defeat for England’s Lauren Smith and Marcus Ellis.

The number 8 seeds were beaten in straight games 21-16 21-17 by the newly formed Indonesian pair of Tontowi Ahmad and Debby Susanto.

The English pair led 6-0 in the opening game before going on a barren run, winning just 2 out of a possible 12 points to lose the first game 21-16. The World number 14’s then found themselves constantly chasing the second game, inevitably losing out 21-17.

Adcock’s survive a scare

On the flip side England’s Chris and Gabrielle Adcock have made it to the second round after their victory over the hometown pair of Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing (Malaysia).

The 4th seeds came through a near hour long opening match to come back from a game down to beat the Malaysians, 20-22, 21-11,21-15.

Elsewhere it was joy for another English pair as Ben Lane and Jessica Pugh ran out 21-17, 13-21, 21-15 winners over Kohei Gondo and Ayane Kurihara (Japan).

The German pair of Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich also came through an hour-long match to beat the established Indonesian duo of Ronald Ronald and Annisa Saufika, 19-21, 21-17, 24-22 to make it into round two.

The Netherlands’ Robin Tabeling/Selena Piek and France’s Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue will be looking to improve on Europe’s chances in the Mixed Doubles category when they face their respective opening round matches tomorrow.
