Marin: I’ll be ready again soon

The Fuzhou China Open, a Super 750 BWF World Tour event, is a big milestone event on the Badminton calendar. Today, the opening round matches began with a few key results coming in already.

Spain’s Carolina Marin featured in the French Open final just nine days ago. It has been a terrific comeback for the reigning Olympic champion, but the signs of some much-needed rest showed in that final. A week’s break may be exactly what she needed.

I tried my best
In Fuzhou, Marin had drawn the number one seed Tai Tzu Ying, whom she beat in straight games in the French Open semifinal. However, from the start Marin was not moving freely on court, although fought hard in the opening game, losing 21-16. In the second game, it was abundantly clear there was nothing left to give, so Marin conceded the match at 13-1 down. Posting on Instagram after the match, Marin says:

- I tried to give my best, but I've been sick for the last few days. I'll be ready again soon!

This sheds some light on what happened and thankfully it was not a reoccurrence of her injury. We will be seeing her back on court shortly.

Going the distance
Germany’s men’s doubles pair Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel continue their positive form in 2019 with a well fought, action-packed three game win over Taiwan’s Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan. This is especially satisfying after missing out on the opportunity to play at their home tournament in Saarbrücken, Germany.

In the next round they will face China’s number seven seeds Han Cheng Kai and Zhou Hao Dong. This will likely be another tight and entertaining match, as they have played twice before, each time going the distance. Both matches narrowly went to the Chinese pair, who this time will also have the home support.
