The surprise package in the men’s singles qualification was Dane, Philip Illum Klindt, who surpassed two seeds to make it into the main draw.

Yesterday, Klindt was the victor in a three-game battle with Turkey’s Emre Lale. Today the young Dane faced the experienced Vladimir Malkov, which proved to be a level too far. The Russian eighth seed, in a solid display, dispatched the Dane 21-11, 21-10. Following the match, Malkov said.

-I think it went pretty well actually today. I expected that the match will be a tough one for sure. My preparation was for this one, so that is why I tried to focus on my start today. I think I did everything I needed to do against him to win.

I was fresher
Klindt has played a lot of badminton this week, a fact that Malkov knew very well.

-I think he was quite tired after yesterday, especially as he played a lot of matches in the qualification rounds, so maybe with that, there was some advantage for me. Today I was fresher and more focused than him.

Klindt is also playing in the men’s doubles with his partner Mads Thogersen and looks forward to a match against the Canadian number one seeds, Jason Anthony Ho-Shue and Nyl Yakura. While Malkov will face Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chia Hao in the quarterfinal.
