In the first round at All England, the Dutch pair Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek were facing the Danes, Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje.
Tabeling and Piek were off to a good start in the first game. They controlled the whole game and managed to take the game 21-10.
- The first game was amazing. We had a good feeling and a good game plan. I think in the entire game we were on top of them, Piek said.
The second game looked totally different as Christiansen and Bøje had found a new game plan. The Danes took the lead and had made quite a gap, but the Dutch managed to find their way back and all of a sudden, the game was very close. In the end, the Danes got a game point, but once again Tabeling and Piek kept their focus and closed the match 22-20.
- Of course, we knew that they were going to change something, because we took the first game so convincingly and if they had carried on, they would have gone down. They surprised us a little about their speed and it took a little too long to get used to it and do the right things against it. But from 8-15 we got a good serve situation and some easy quick points, and they seemed to get a little stressed and we got the vibe again, Robin said.
A tough loss to take
After the match Christiansen and Bøje were truly sad about the loss against Piek and Tabeling. In an interview, Christiansen told what the difference was in the second game.
- I feel like we had a little more energy in the second game, we were moving our feet a bit more and tried to be a little more aggressive, and I think that was why we were off to a good start but it was not enough, Christiansen said.
Tomorrow Tabeling and Piek will be facing first seeded Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong from China.
