Organization Overview

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.


Position Overview

This position reports to the Senior Director, Sports Partnerships and Unified Sports but works in close collaboration with the Directors of Coaching & Education and Sport Operations. The Manager, Sport Development is responsible for creating sport-specific development plans for Athletics and Badminton inclusive of technical manuals and operations, budgets and updated resources.


This position will increase opportunities for impactful sport training and competition in the priority sports. Based on collaboration with other departments, this position will be responsible to maintain and enhance sport organization and strategic partnerships, while ensuring development of local programming initiatives. Additionally, this role will help identify and track data and research trends within priority sports, and may attend sport- specific industry meetings and conferences, either virtually or in-person.


Within the assigned sports, this position collaborates to ensure alignment with the planning, organization, and coordination of Sport media relations activities; writes and distributes stories and information to the Regional communications directors for global distribution. The Manager, Sports development responds to various requests for resources, photos, statistics, and related information.


Responsibilities

  • Develops, writes and updates sport-specific development plans specific to Athletics and Badminton, including partnerships, coaching, marketing, communications, competitions and sport operations.
  • Gathers, compiles and track Sport-specific statistical information and trends. Using both internal and external data.
  • Develops and maintains SOI relationships with various Sport Organizations globally and as support for Regional partnerships.
  • Responsible for oversight of global Sport Resource Team and liaisons with Regional Sport Advisors for sport-specific policy development and oversight including sport guides and rules proposals.
  • Support the planning, coordination, of public relations efforts in relation to Sport Partners, Coaching, and Competition management.
  • May travel to various federation or SO hosted events to provide informational support.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management or a related field, Master’s preferred
  • Experience working with International Sports Organizations
  • Desired experience working with Special Olympics
  • Familiarity with research, record keeping and reporting
  • Experience in project planning and implementation
  • Experience working with people with Intellectual Disabilities and/or other disability populations
