Matthew and Christopher Grimley lost the decider to the Indian second seeds.
The Grimley Twins have the label of being ‘a pair for the future’ and slowly they are taking the steps towards the top of the European tree. The Scots are ranked 14 in Europe (12 if you remove retired Mathias Boe/ Mads Conrad-Petersen and Jelle Maas from the ranking), and for the first time they entered a tournament at World Tour Super 300 level.
In the opening game against Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty from India, the youngsters pushed the world number 10 pair, but the brothers came up short losing 21-18. In the second game the Indians took the lead, but the Grimleys gained control from 7-7 and won 21-19.
- It was not too hard to defend because of the conditions in the hall, and the shuttles were quite slow, the Grimleys stated.
Be brave
In the decider it was one-way-traffic, and the Indians cliched the second round spot winning 21-16 after 69 minutes of play.
- We are a bit disappointed that we did not manage to finish this one off. They are one of the best pairs in the world and we are happy about our performance and that we took them to three games.
Former Scottish top player Robert Blair was coaching the men’s doubles, and he encouraged them to take their chances throughout the whole match up.
- He said that we had to be brave and to take them on. There was nothing to lose, the Grimleys added.
