China was by far the most successful nation at this year’s Denmark Open. On Sunday Chinese players claimed four out of five titles at the BWF World Tour 750 event.
The first match of the day was the mixed doubles clash between the two Chinese pairs Zheng Si Wei/Huang Ya Qiong and Feng Yan Zhe/Huang Dong Ping. After a 68 minutes lasting battle the reigning World Champions Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong won 21-19 20-22 21-19. It was already the eighth title in 2022 for the duo. “I’m really happy but this is not the end. There are two more tournaments to play”, said Zheng Si Wei, already looking forward to the French Open next week and the World Tour finals in December.
After China took the second title of the they with Chen Qing Chen/Jia Yi Fan beating Baek Ha Na/Lee So Hee from Korea 21-12 and 21-15 it was time for another nation to take over.
The men’s doubles final was a clash between the two Indonesian pairs Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto. Gideon/Sukamuljo who were leading the head-to-head 6-3 before today’s final were off to a good start, leading 17-11 in the first game. But Alfian/Ardianto started a great comeback to win 21-19.
The Minions (nickname of Gideon/Sukamuljo) were also leading in 12-6 in the second game and had three game point at 20-17. But again, they could not convert and finally lost 26-28, blowing six game points in total.
In women’s singles He Bing Jiao won the match against Chen Yu Fei 22-20 12-21 21-10 in the second Chinese-only match of the day.
Shi wins first title since 2019
In men’s singles the crowd in the Jyske Bank Arena witnessed a high-class 64-minute match between Lee Zii Jia from Malaysia and Shi Yu Qi from China. And also in the last match of the day it was a Chinese player to win and lift the trophy in the end.
Shi Yu Qi won 21-18 16-21 21-12 to celebrate his first tournament win on the world tour since 2019. “It is unbelievable. When the match finished, I could feel that the tears were about to come” said an emotional Shi Yu Qi after the match.
