Badminton Europe would like to wish the German Badminton Association a happy 70th anniversary.

In Germany, the sport of badminton as we know it today developed from the end of the 1940s. On 18 January 1953, the German Badminton Association was finally founded in Wiesbaden. "70 years of the German Badminton Association - we are badminton! We celebrate the past and look forward to shaping the future of our sport," said Ralf Michaelis, President of the German Badminton Association.

The founding meeting was embedded in the first German Individual Championships which took place on 17-18 January 1953 in the Schlossreithalle in Wiesbaden. Today, a total of 166,069 people are currently organized in the German Badminton Association - via clubs and state associations. The German association has its office in Mülheim an der Ruhr (North Rhine-Westphalia), which is part of the "German Badminton Center" located there.

The first international match in the history of the German Badminton Association - a friendly international against the Netherlands - was played in Bonn on 10 January 1954. In European championships, numerous titles went to badminton players from Germany in the past decades.

Historic achievements in 2022

One of the most successful years for German badminton was the year 2022, in which athletes from Germany won two European Championship titles (Mark Lamsfuß/Marvin Seidel in men's doubles and Mark Lamsfuß/Isabel Lohau in mixed), one European Championship silver (Linda Efler/Isabel Lohau in women's doubles) and also World Championship bronze (Mark Lamsfuß/Isabel Lohau in mixed). Mark Lamsfuß/Isabel Lohau even wrote badminton history: For the first time, Germany won the title in the mixed competition at European Championships and for the first time German athletes won a medal in this discipline at World Championships.
