Things are getting serious at the YONEX US Open 2023 in Council Bluffs, USA. After two days of action we are approaching the round of 16 today with many Europeans still in the title race.

Jan Louda (Czech Republic) has a good run recently and keeps up his convincing performances at the US Open. After giving a great fight to the later runner-up Christo Popov in the round of 16 at the European Games (19-21, 21-23) and a great win against Weng Hong Yang (China) in the first round of the Canada Open, Louda also had a great first round in Council Bluffs beating Arnaud Merkle (France) 21-8, 21-18. In today's round of 16, Louda will face Canada Open champion Lakshya Sen from India.

With Mads Christophersen and Magnus Johannesen (both Denmark) we will see two more European men's singles today.

In women's singles Line Christophersen from Denmark will try to make a deep run as number eight seed in the tournament. She will face Vivien Sandorhazi from Hungary in an all European encounter today. Julie Dawall Jakobsen (Denmark) and Ksenia Polikarpova (Israel) will also fight for a spot in the quarterfinal.

Søgaard and Kjær can not repeat last weeks final run

Last weeks Canada Open finalists Frederik Søgaard and Rasmus Kjaer from Denmark fell short to Yang/Chiu from Chinese Taipei in three games yesterday 19-21, 21-16, 20-22. After beating the same pair last week, the Danes were close to repeating the result but could not convert their matchpoint at 20-19 in the decider.

The Scottish twins Matthew and Christopher Grimley as well as Easton/Russ (England), Geiss/Voelker (Germany), and Corvee/Labar (France) will represent Europe in today's men's doubles round of 16.

With Maiken Fruergaard / Sara Thygesen (Denmark) as number one seed and Margot Lambert / Anne Tran (France) as number three seed in women's doubles, as well as Mathias Thyrri / Amalie Magelund (Denmark) as number three seeds in mixed doubles, there are even more promising European pairs in the tournament.

Jan Voelker and Stine Kuespert (Germany) will face a tough challenge today as they will play against the top-seeded mixed doubles pair Ye Hong Wei / Lee Chia Hsin from Chinese Taipei. At their only previous encounter at the Portugal International 2022 the Germans fell short in three games and will try to take revenge today.
