Electrifying matches featuring top European stars and unmatched entertainment promise an unforgettable new edition of the European Championships.
As the 2024 European Championships approach, Saarbrücken, Germany, readies itself to host a show of European badminton unlike any other in just under two weeks.
The excitement kicks off on Monday 8 April, and Tuesday and Wednesday will feature key evening matches with top German players aiming to impress on home turf against some of Europe’s best, promising great performances.
Key clashes: matches not to miss
Reigning European Champions Mark Lamsfuss/ Isabel Lohau, sixth seeds, kicks off the Tuesday evening session at 19:00 as they will take on Irish pair Joshua Magee/ Moya Ryan on a new one-court setup, with full focus for spectators and viewers on that sole court. Another German duo, Daniel Hess/ Patrick Scheiel, is set to challenge the eighth-seeded French brothers, Christo Popov/ Toma Junior Popov when they enter the spectacle as second match of the evening.
While the previous match-ups will be the first encounters between those pairs, a rematch stirring excitement sees Germany’s Bjarne Geiss/ Jan Colin Völker against French duo Lucas Corvee/ Ronan Labar, sixth seeds, in the final match of the night. The two pairs had their last and only encounter so far, a three-game thriller at the Nantes International in 2022. With the advantage of a home crowd, can the German pair reverse their previous defeat?
On Wednesday 10 April, the evening session sees world number one, Viktor Axelsen, aiming for his fourth European Championship title, facing off against one of Germany’s own, Kai Schaefer on the one-court showdown at 19:00. After the Axelsen-Schaefer encounter, it will be time for France’s Olympics hope, the mixed doubles Thom Giqcuel/Delphine Delrue when they kick off their European campaign. Will France finally get its first ever European title?
Finally, as the last match of the Wednesday evening, Germany’s men’s singles champion and Wild Card recipient, Matthias Kicklitz, takes the stage for his first match at the European Championships.
