European players give a mixed performance on day 1 in Malaysia Masters. Before Viktor Axelsen and Anders Antonsen take center stage in Malaysia tomorrow, the Europeans have had both positive and not-so-positive performances on day 1 at the Malaysia Masters.

European Defeats
Mads Christophersen started the day out perfectly, winning the round of 16 of the qualification rounds. However, he ended up losing in a close three-game match against Hong Kong’s Jason Gunawan. Other Europeans who lost on the first day include Mads Vestergaard/ Daniel Lundgaard, Polina Buhrova/ Yevheniaa Kantemyr, Christo Popov/ Toma Junior Popov, Oleksii Titov/ Yevheniaa Kantemyr, Christopher Grimley/ Matthew Grimley, and Alexander Dunn/ Adam Hall.

Today’s Winners
Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova managed to secure two victories on the day, bringing her two steps closer to the main draw of the Super 500 tournament, which would be a huge achievement for the Ukrainian. Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva dominated their first match and won easily in 2 games (21-15, 21-10) against Hong Kong’s Ka Yan Fan/ Mau Ying Yau. Kim Astrup/ Anders Rasmussen also easily managed to pull through in their match with the Indonesian pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama/ Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani.

For tomorrow’s matches, there is a lot to look forward to for European fans, with Anders Antonsen and Viktor Axelsen both hoping to make a statement after a loss in momentum for both of them.
